Shell resultants

Shell resultants are derived from element forces. To ensure that shell resultants are included in your results file, be sure to include a force output request in your solution.

In post-processing, you can display shell resultants in terms of different coordinate systems by selecting them from the Coordinate System list in the Results tab of the Post View dialog box. The coordinate system you select is projected onto the plane of each element and is used to create a consistent coordinate basis across all elements in the mesh. The X and Y resultant components are displayed in terms of the selected coordinate system and are oriented uniformly throughout the mesh.

You can display shell resultants in terms of the following coordinate systems:

  • Absolute Rectangular

  • Absolute Cylindrical

  • Absolute Spherical

  • Work Rectangular

  • Work Cylindrical

  • Work Spherical

  • Native

  • Material

  • Selected Rectangular

  • Selected Cylindrical

  • Selected Spherical

Mapping Pre/Post to Simcenter Nastran shell resultant components

The following figures show the internal forces and moments for the PSHELL element:

Shell element forces

Shell element moments

The terminology used for shell resultants in the Post Processing Navigator does not match the terminology used by Simcenter Nastran in the .f06 file. The following table maps the shell resultant terminology used in Pre/Post and the corresponding Simcenter Nastran convention:

PSHELL element forces and moments Post-processing Nastran .f06
Fx Membrane Force NXX MEMBRANE FORCES X
Fy Membrane Force NYY MEMBRANE FORCES Y
Fxy Membrane Force NXY MEMBRANE FORCES XY
Mx Bending Moment MXX* BENDING MOMENTS X*
My Bending Moment MYY* BENDING MOMENTS Y*
Mxy Bending Moment MXY* BENDING MOMENTS XY*
Vx Shear Force QXZ TRANSVERSE SHEAR FORCES X
Vy Shear Force QYZ TRANSVERSE SHEAR FORCES Y
Note: * For bending moments, the signs are reversed. That is, a negative value in Pre/Post is a positive value in the .f06 file, and vice versa.

For more information, see Forces and Moments in the Simcenter Nastran Element Library.
