Create a thermal coupling

  1. Choose Home tab→Loads and Conditions group→Thermal Coupling .

  2. Select a primary region to represent one of the two regions. When you model conduction between two surfaces, the primary region is typically the smaller of the two surfaces.

  3. Select the secondary region. To model conduction between two surfaces, in the Secondary Region group, select the region to represent the second surface. To model conduction between a surface and an entity that is not represented geometrically, do the following:In the Secondary Region Override group, select the Override Secondary Region check box. From the Non-Geometric Element list, select a non-geometric element modeling object, or click Create Modeling Object to create a non-geometric element modeling object.

  4. In the Magnitude group, from the Type list, select the type of thermal coupling. If the secondary region is a non-geometric element, the following restrictions apply:For the Total Conductance type of coupling, you must select the Per Element check box in the Distribution group. The Secondary Region Override option is supported only for per element total conductance. For the Conductive Gap type of coupling, the Secondary Region Override option is not supported.

  5. Depending on the Type option you select, in the Conductance, Resistance, Coefficient, Conductance per Length, or Gap Thermal Conductivity box, enter an expression or a field varying with time, temperature, heat flow rate, temperature difference, or thermal capacitance between the two regions.

  6. If you are modeling conduction between two surfaces, do the following:In the Additional Parameters group, from the Coupling Resolution list, select the type of coupling resolution.Select the Overlap Projection Direction, or clear the Only Connect Overlapping Elements check box. If the secondary region is a non-geometric element, the Secondary Region Override option is supported only for the One-to-One type of coupling resolution.

  7. Click OK.
