Deformed model displays

When you create a deformed model display, the deformation is calculated based on the nodal displacements. The displacements are initially transformed and scaled with respect to the origin of the current coordinate system. By default, this is the absolute coordinate system, but it can also be the work coordinate system or a selected results or model coordinate system. See Coordinate systems in post-processing.

For models that include 2D shell elements, you can select the deformation be calculated based on:

  • VectorDeforms the model display based on a vector component or magnitude, such as displacement or heat flux, and applies the deformations in the direction of that component or, in the case of magnitude, along the vector itself. When you select Vector, you can use the Deform Shell Elements by Normal Component check box to deform the 2D shell elements in a model along the shell normal direction.

  • ScalarDeforms the model display based on nodal scalar results, such as Pressure – Nodal, and applies the deformations along the shell normal direction.

You can also use the Deform Shell Elements by Normal Component check box to align the 2D shell elements along the shell normal direction.

Transforming deformations with respect to a selected reference node

When comparing results from different analysis, working with multiple overlaid post views, or working with large, multi-body system models, you may find it useful to transform and scale deformations with respect to a selected reference node.

The following figure shows three rigid body modes transformed with respect to the origin of the absolute rectangular coordinate system. The mode shapes are displayed alongside the undeformed model.

You can select a node on the model to serve as a consistent reference node for deformations. The same three rigid body modes now appear transformed with respect to the selected reference node.
