Margin of safety
Margin of safety workflow
This workflow represents a typical margin of safety solution where the results are obtained from a SOL 101 linear static analysis and built-in methods are uses for the margin of safety calculations.
| Step | Step detail | Detailed help topics | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. | Create the FEM and Simulation | In the New FEM and Simulation dialog box, set the solver to Simcenter Nastran or MSC Nastran and the analysis type to Structural. | Create new FEM and Simulation files |
| 2. | Specify the Nastran solution | In the Solution dialog box, select the SOL 101 solution type. | SOL 101 setup for margin of safety |
| 3. | Construct the FE model | Define the material properties, meshes, and so on as you would for any other structural solution. | MaterialsMeshing |
| 4. | Create the subcases | In the Simulation Navigator, right-click the solution node and choose New Subcase. | Create or modify a solution step or subcase |
| 5. | Create the loads and constraints | For a SOL 101 Linear Statics - Subcase Constraints solution type, in each subcase create the loads and constraints. For a SOL 101 Linear Statics - Global Constraints solution type, in each subcase create the loads and above the subcase level create the constraints. | SOL 101 setup for margin of safetyBoundary conditions |
| 6. | Create contact and glue | Above the subcase level, create contact and glue.Note: When the model includes contact, as a best practice, initialize the contact status for each subcase. To do so, edit the global contact parameters and change the contact status to Start from Initial. | SOL 101 setup for margin of safetyContact and glue conditions |
| 7. | Edit the output requests | Margin of safety calculations may require results that the solver does not output by default. If you are using such a calculation, you must edit the solver output requests so that they produce the required results. | SOL 101 setup for margin of safetyRequesting output for Nastran analyses |
| 8. | Solve the linear static model | The Solution Monitor contains information about the status of your solution, and the Nastran .op2 file contains the requested results from your analysis. | Solve the model |
| 9. | Create the margin of safety solution | In the Simulation Navigator, right-click the simulation node and choose New Solution Process→Margin of Safety. | Create a margin of safety solution |
| 10. | Create the load case sets | In the Simulation Navigator, right-click Load Case Sets and choose Add Load Case Set. | Load case sets (margin of safety)Create a load case set for a margin of safety calculation |
| 11. | Create the margin of safety calculations | In the Simulation Navigator, right-click Calculations and choose Create Calculation. | Margin of safety calculationsCreate a margin of safety calculation |
| 12. | Solve the margin of safety solution | In the Simulation Navigator, right-click the margin of safety solution node and choose Solve All Calculations.Upon successful completion, in the Simulation Navigator, in the Status column, Success appears. | |
| 13. | Review the margin of safety results | In the Simulation Navigator, right-click the margin of safety solution node and choose Display Results. | Margin of safety results |
