Model water sloshing in a bottle

This example shows how to set up the solution for modeling water that sloshes in a bottle. The water bottle model has two distinct polygon bodies: body (1) represents the initial location of the air in the bottle and body (2) represents the initial location of the water.

You do the following steps:

  1. Assign the mixture to the mesh.

  2. Define an acceleration boundary condition.

  3. Define the initial tracked fluid region.

  4. Solve and post-process results.

Assign the mixture to the mesh

You assign the mixture to the mesh in the mesh collector in the FEM.

In the Simulation Navigator , right-click the solid mesh collector node and choose Edit.

  • In the Material group, from the Type list, select Mixture.

  • In the Mixture row, click Open Manager .

  • From the Type list, select Immiscible Fluid Mixture.

  • Click Create.

  • From the Tracked Fluid list, select air or click Choose material to select air from the material library.

  • From the Complementary Fluid list, select water or click Choose material to select water from the material library.

  • Click OK.

  • Click Add to List.

  • Click Close to close the Modeling Objects Manager dialog box.

  • Click OK to close the Mesh Collector dialog box.

Define an acceleration boundary condition

You set an existing acceleration field that varies with time in the Simulation file.

Choose Home tab→Loads and Conditions group→Simulation Object TypeMoving Frame of Reference .

From the Type list, select Translating Frame of Reference.

In the Simulation Navigator , double-click the acceleration field node under the Fields node.

  • In the Acceleration row, click Plot(XY) .

  • Click OK.

The acceleration simulates the sloshing movement in the X direction.

Choose Home tab→Context group→Return to Model .

Define the initial tracked fluid region

From the drop-down list, select .

Choose Home tab→Loads and Conditions group→Constraint TypeInitial Conditions .

From the Type list, select Initial Immiscible Fluid Mixture — 3D Flow.

Select the initial tracked fluid region (air) and click OK to close the dialog box.

Solve and post-process results

In the Simulation Navigator , right-click the solution node, and choose Edit.

  1. On the Solution Details tab, set the following parameters:Solver Selection = Parallel Solver****Solution Type = Transient

  2. On the Transient Setup tab, set the following times:Start Time = 0 secEnd Time = 1 sec

  3. Click OK.

The start and end times are the same as for the acceleration field.

In the Simulation Navigator , right-click the solution node, and choose Solve.

After you solve, you can animate the results. The volume fraction result set displays the fraction of the tracked fluid in an element. One means that the element contains only air, zero means that the element contains only water.
