Create design variables for the model update solution process

  1. Open the Modeling Objects Manager dialog box in one of these ways:Choose Home tab→Properties group→Modeling Objects .In Solution dialog box, on the Bulk Data tab, in the Design Variables row, click .The Solution dialog box is open when you either create or edit a SOL 200 Model Update solution. See Create the work solution for the model update solution process for more information.

  2. From the Type list, select Design Variable — Material or Design Variable — Property.

  3. Click Create. The Design Variable dialog box opens.

  4. In the Properties group, under Design Variable (DESVAR), in the Label box, type a descriptive label for the design variable.Nastran identifies each design variable with this label. You can type a maximum of 8 characters.

  5. (Optional) Modify the value in the Initial Value box.Because the Model Update solution process assumes that the initial value and the lower and upper bounds represent scale factors and not actual values, you must also modify the Lower Bound and Upper Bound values when you modify the Initial Value. If you leave the bounds blank, the Model Update solution process sets the values to 0.5 and 2.0, respectively.

  6. Specify the material property or physical property that the design variable is referencing:If you selected Design Variable — Material from the Type list in the step 2, do the following:Under Material Relation (DVMREL1), from the Material list, select the material record that contains the material property. From the Type list, select the type of material, for example, MAT1.From the Material Field list, select the material property. If you selected Design Variable — Property or Design Variable — Composite Property from the Type list in the step 2, do the following:Under Property Relation (DVPREL1), from the Type list, select the type of physical property to vary, for example, for Design Variable — Property, PSHELL, or for Design Variable — Composite Property, PCOMP.From the Physical Property list, select the physical property table that contains the property to vary. From the Property Field list, select the physical property to vary.

  7. Click OK to close the Design Variable dialog box.

  8. Repeat steps 2 — 7 to define as many design variables as you need for the Model Update solution process. You can copy an existing design variable modeling object and modify the copy instead of creating the modeling object from scratch.

  9. Click Close to close the Modeling Objects Manager dialog box.
