Define surface-to-surface contact (Abaqus)
You define surface-to-surface contact by creating face pairs. You can define face pairs for surface-to-surface contact automatically or manually.
Define contact regions automatically
Lets you select the region that defines the contacting surface in the surface pair. The first surface defines the direction for the contacts. Select an existing region or click New Region to create a new region. For more information, see Working with reusable regions.
Choose Home tab→Loads and Conditions group→Surface-to-Surface Contact .
In the Surface to Surface Contact dialog box, from the Type list, select Automatic Pairing.
In the Automatic Face Pair Creation group, click Create Face Pairs .
In the Create Automatic Face Pairs dialog box: (Optional) Specify a Face Pair Search Subset.Select a Grouping Option.Preview the face pairs, and if necessary, modify the distance tolerance to generate more or fewer pairs. For more information, see Create Automatic Face Pairs dialog box.
(Optional) In the Contact Pair group, select or create a Contact Property modeling object to define non-standard properties for the specified regions of the contact. For more information, see Defining contact properties (Abaqus Dynamic Explicit analyses).
(Optional) To associate the generated contact pairs with the automatic pair recipe, select the Associate to Automatic Pair Recipe check box. When you select the check box, the generated contact pairs appear in the Simulation Navigator with the prefix Auto. If you update the master part, the software recalculates the face pairs and updates the boundary condition.
Click OK to return to the Create Surface-to-Surface Contact dialog box.
Define contact regions manually
Choose Home tab→Loads and Conditions group→Surface-to-Surface Contact .
In the Surface to Surface Contact dialog box, and from the Type list, select Manual.
In the Master Surface group, select the first set of surfaces or element faces.
In the Slave Surface group, select the second set of surfaces and element faces.
(Optional) In the Contact Pair group, select or create a Contact Property modeling object to define non-standard properties for the specified regions of the contact. For more information, see Defining contact properties (Abaqus Dynamic Explicit analyses).
(Optional) In the Contact Smoothing group, select or create a Surface Smoothing modeling object to specify the method to use to improve the contact stress and pressure accuracy for axisymmetric, or nearly axisymmetric, surfaces. Three smoothing techniques are available: circumferential, spherical, and toroidal. In the Surface Smoothing dialog box, select the appropriate method and then select the points that define the region through which to apply the smoothing. For more information, see Surface Smoothing dialog box (Abaqus).
